Medell K. Briggs-Malonson, MD, MPH, the Medical Director of Quality at Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Hospital, Los Angeles, CA, received her Doctorate of Medicine from Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, and a Master of Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA. Dr. Briggs-Malonson is a licensed emergency physician and surgeon who practices in the Los Angeles County health care system and is interested in working with medically and socially underserved African-Americans and Latinos to identify possible causes and solutions to overcoming racial and ethnic health disparities, particularly the disproportionate rate of functional disability and mortality that affects low income communities of color

“Community Heart: Improving heart failure outcomes of African American elderly.” Dr. Briggs-Malonson’s RCMAR/CHIME-funded project resulted in the development a community based Heart Failure (HF) education and skills building program using Community Partnered Participatory Research (CPPR) methods to improve the health outcomes of African-American elders with Chronic Health Failure (CHF) living in an underserved Los Angeles community.
