Diana M. Tisnado, PhD, MPA

Diana M. Tisnado, PhD, MPA, a Professor in the Department of Health Science, College of Health and Human Development, California State University Fullerton, received a Doctorate of Philosophy from UCLA Department of Medicine, and a Master of Public Administration from the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government. Dr. Tisnado is interested in addressing disparities in cancer care and outcomes among minority elders, particularly understanding the pathways by which community-level factors may be associated with the receipt of appropriate care for breast cancer care in ethnic neighborhoods, particularly for the growing immigrant populations.

Project

2009-2010 NH/NIA Research Supplement to Promote Diversity in Health-related Research (Diversity Supplement), “An evaluation of lay navigators as an intervention to improve breast cancer screening among Pacific Islanders.” Dr. Tisnado’s 2006-2007 RCMAR/CHIME-funded project and 2009-10 RCMAR/CHIME-sponsored diversity-supplement project built on each other to explore the methodologies for defining and identifying “immigrant neighborhoods,” examined whether the effects such neighborhoods confer on health care and outcomes more closely resemble an “immigrant enclave” model or “ethnic community” model, how these neighborhoods and their effects compare with the neighborhood-level effects on non-Hispanic African Americans and whites in the communities where they live, and how these effects specifically impact older community members.
