Projects

  • 2003-2004 Pilot Project, “The neighborhood environment and the health of older adults with chronic illness.” Dr. Arleen F. Brown’s two (2) RCMAR/CHIME-funded projects – funded in 2002-03 and 2003-04 – built on each other to evaluate the influence of neighborhood characteristics on health status and other health outcomes for persons with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, asthma and depression. Initial analyses suggested that persons with these chronic conditions who live in poor neighborhoods report worse health status than those who live in rich neighborhoods.. For persons without chronic conditions, the differences in health status were much smaller. Dr. Brown performed analyses using the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Survey (L.A.FANS ) data to explore these differences and to identify characteristics of poorer neighborhoods that contribute to poorer health status for people with chronic conditions.
